The Price of Loyalty
When Ryan and I got married, we built our entire life together from absolute scratch with nothing but hope and determination guiding us forward. Fourteen years later, we found ourselves in our mid-30s raising a lively five-year-old son while living in a modest and cramped apartment just outside Denver. We faced constant money stress that never seemed to ease, and most of those financial difficulties came directly from his mother’s expensive house that she could not afford on her own.
She had purchased a home far beyond her actual means, so every extra dollar we earned through long hours and careful budgeting went straight toward her mortgage payments each month without fail. I often watched Ryan transfer the money online with his jaw clenched tightly from the never-ending stress. Whenever I gently suggested a simple weekend trip to give ourselves a much-needed break, he would sigh heavily and repeat the same tired response every single time.
Then one ordinary evening he brought up the idea almost casually while we sat together at the small kitchen table after putting our son to bed. “My coworker’s cousin earned sixty thousand dollars as a surrogate recently and it completely changed her family’s situation. We could finally pay off Mom’s entire house with that kind of money and finally breathe freely without this constant weight pressing down on us.” His eyes actually lit up with genuine excitement for the first time in many long months, and because I truly loved him with all my heart, I eventually agreed to go through with the difficult process despite my own private fears about what it would mean for my body.
The first surrogacy pregnancy went relatively smoothly without any major complications that we could not handle together. We managed to clear most of the outstanding debt on his mother’s house, which brought a temporary sense of relief after years of constant pressure. Then Ryan came home one afternoon waving a carefully prepared spreadsheet and told me we needed to do it just one more time to be completely free from the burden once and for all.
My body was still physically tender and recovering from the previous pregnancy while my hormones continued to fluctuate wildly. He kept encouraging me with gentle persistence, repeating that I was doing this for our future together as a family. So I agreed once again even though part of me was already beginning to feel overwhelmed by the growing emotional and physical toll.
The second pregnancy turned out to be much harder than the first one had been. Morning sickness hit me with greater intensity, my ankles swelled so badly that I could not wear normal shoes for weeks, and I gained significant weight that made even simple daily movements feel exhausting and painful. Ryan eventually started sleeping in the guest room most nights because he claimed my snoring kept him awake and prevented him from getting proper rest for work.
I would lie alone in our bed during those long quiet hours, feeling the baby kick strongly against my ribs while wondering silently how much more of myself I was expected to give. When that second pregnancy finally ended and the baby was delivered safely, Ryan smiled broadly and announced with satisfaction that his mother’s house was now completely paid off. He told me we were finally free from all the financial pressure that had weighed us down for so many years.
But only a month later, he sat me down and told me bluntly that he was no longer attracted to me anymore because I had supposedly let myself go during the pregnancies. Then HE LEFT ME for a 27-year-old coworker whose social media was filled with glamorous bikini photos and luxury vacation pictures. I watched him pack his belongings from the bedroom window with tears streaming down my face, feeling exactly like a used lemon that had been squeezed dry and tossed aside without a second thought.
I truly believed my life was over in those dark weeks that followed his sudden departure. The apartment felt far too quiet and painfully empty without his familiar presence filling the rooms. Even our young son kept asking innocently why Daddy no longer came home to play with him on weekends like before.
My nights were filled with quiet tears as I stared at the stretch marks covering my stomach. They served as permanent reminders of the sacrifices I had willingly made for a man who ultimately decided he no longer wanted me. I felt broken and discarded after giving everything I had to our marriage and his family’s needs over the years.
Until karma arrived in the most unexpected way possible. My close friend Jamie, who still worked at Ryan’s office, called me one afternoon sounding both shocked and amused by the news she had just learned. She told me something that completely changed how I viewed the past fourteen years of sacrifice and loyalty.
“Ryan’s mother sold the house the moment the final mortgage papers were signed and the property was officially hers,” Jamie explained with clear disbelief in her voice. She had moved to a luxury retirement villa in Florida and kept every single penny from the profitable sale for herself without sharing anything. She told Ryan he was young and successful so he did not need the money and instead put the entire sum into a trust fund for his sister’s children — the same sister he had not spoken to in years.
Ryan had lost all his own savings on his mother’s house and was now completely broke with almost nothing left. His younger girlfriend quickly left him because he could no longer afford the lifestyle he had promised her. A week later, he showed up at my door looking exhausted, wrinkled, and desperate for forgiveness.
“Lauren,” he whispered with red and tired eyes, “Mom betrayed me completely after everything I did for her. I have nothing left now and my girlfriend is gone. I made a terrible mistake and I want to come home so we can be a family again like we used to be.”
I looked at him standing there on the doorstep and felt nothing but quiet pity after so many years together. “Ryan, you did not make a simple mistake that can be easily forgiven,” I said calmly while meeting his eyes. “You made a deliberate choice to put your mother’s house and financial security before my health during two difficult pregnancies.”
“You chose a younger woman and a different lifestyle over the loyalty and sacrifices I showed you for fourteen years,” I continued steadily. “You did not just leave me — you traded me after I gave you everything I had, including my body twice for your family’s sake.” He tried to argue that he was still the father of our child, but I reminded him he could see our son on weekends as already arranged through proper channels.
I closed the door gently but firmly on his face and walked back into the kitchen where warm afternoon light streamed through the windows. As I caught my reflection in the mirror, I saw the stretch marks, the tired eyes, and the extra weight that remained from the pregnancies. For the first time since he had left, I did not see someone who had failed or let herself go — I saw a strong woman who had survived tremendous hardship and was finally free to build a new life on her own terms.
The Lesson:
True loyalty should never come at the cost of your own health, dignity, or self-worth. Sometimes the bravest and healthiest choice is to close the door on someone who repeatedly chose others over you, even after you gave them everything you had.
Question for you:
If you had sacrificed your body and well-being multiple times for your partner’s family, only to be abandoned when you were no longer “useful,” would you take them back when they returned broken and regretful, or would you choose yourself and move forward with your child? Why?
