“Still water. Three ice cubes. Exactly. Cold, but not enough to numb my palate. Lemon—one thin slice.”

Aisha returned again and again. Too much ice. Too little. Finally—
“Acceptable.”
Then Vivien overturned the glass onto the marble floor.
“Oops,” she said lightly. “Clean that.”
Aisha knelt.
The marble was cold beneath her knees.
But then—she did something no one ever did.
She looked up.
Not with anger.

For the first time, Vivien Marquez blinked.
The next days were worse.

“Mateo,” she said sweetly. “This glass is dirty.”
It wasn’t.

“Mommy, why is that lady being mean to the waiter?”
A little girl—five years old at most.
The restaurant froze.
Vivien turned slowly.
“Children should learn when to be quiet,” she said coldly.
The girl’s father stood.

Vivien raised her hand—then hesitated.
Without another word, she grabbed her bag and left.

On Monday, Renato Marquez called Aisha into the office.

He slid an envelope across the desk—three months’ salary and a letter of recommendation.
“We’re separating,” he said. “And thank you—for ending something I was too cowardly to confront.”
Two months later, Llairmont was no longer ruled by fear.
Mateo was promoted.
Claudia stood taller.
