Katie Porter Nearly Walks Out of CBS Interview

Katie Porter’s Interview Sparks Massive Online Reaction

Almost 2 million people have now watched Katie Porter’s tense exchange with CBS reporter Julie Watts. The California governor candidate nearly walked out during the interview, and her reaction has caused a political stir across the state.

Porter, a former Democratic congresswoman, is one of the top contenders to replace Governor Gavin Newsom in 2026. However, this interview raised questions about her temperament and how she handles tough media scrutiny.

When the Questions Got Heated

Watts started with a pointed question:

“What do you say to the 40% of California voters who voted for Trump?”

Porter frowned and replied, “How would I need them in order to win, ma’am?” She argued that California is heavily Democratic, so she doesn’t depend on GOP votes to win a general election.

Watts then asked what Porter would do if another Democrat entered the race. Porter said, “I don’t intend that to be the case,” adding that she could still attract some Republican voters.

However, when Watts reminded her about a past comment — that she didn’t need “those Trump voters” — Porter grew defensive.

“You asked me if I needed them to win,” she said. “I feel like this is unnecessarily argumentative. What is your question?”

Watts calmly explained that she asked every candidate the same question, but Porter appeared frustrated.

Porter Almost Ends the Interview

The tension quickly escalated.

“I don’t want to keep doing this. I’m going to call it. Thank you,” Porter said, reaching for her microphone.

Watts asked, “You’re not gonna do the interview with us?”
Porter responded, “No, not like this. I’m not, not with seven follow-ups to every single question you ask.”

Watts began to reply, but Porter interrupted again:

“I don’t care, I don’t care.”

Watts reminded her that asking follow-ups was part of investigative journalism. Porter sighed and said, “I don’t wanna have an unhappy experience with you. And I don’t want this all on camera.”

Despite the tension, Porter stayed. Politico reported that she continued the interview for another 20 minutes after calming down.

Political Rivals React

Porter’s opponents immediately jumped on the viral clip.

“No candidate for governor should hide from the press or mistreat them,” said Tony Thurmond, another Democrat, in a comment to Politico. “We owe it to the public to be transparent.”

A spokesperson for Antonio Villaraigosa added:

“We need a governor who can solve hard problems and isn’t afraid to answer simple questions.”

Their responses fueled the online debate, with some voters praising Watts’s professionalism and others defending Porter’s frustration.

Porter’s Tough Reputation

USA Today noted that Porter’s time in Congress often included conflict with party leaders and reports of staff tension. Her ex-husband also accused her of domestic abuse — claims she strongly denied.

Still, Porter built her reputation as a no-nonsense lawmaker. Her whiteboard questioning style in congressional hearings made her a viral star and a symbol of accountability. She frequently challenged CEOs and public officials and gained millions of views online.

However, in this latest case, her assertiveness seemed to backfire. Many observers said she appeared irritated instead of confident when pressed by the reporter.

The Bigger Picture

With the California primary set for June, Porter faces growing pressure to prove her leadership under scrutiny. Her campaign will likely focus on repairing her public image and rebuilding trust with both voters and the media.

Although some supporters admire her passion, critics believe this moment revealed a potential weakness in handling stress. In today’s digital world, every reaction matters — and millions have already seen this one.
