Stewart’s Message on The Daily Show
On Monday night’s The Daily Show, Jon Stewart once again turned his attention to former President Donald Trump and his most vocal supporters. This time, however, Stewart issued a simple but direct appeal: stop bending over backwards to defend what he described as Trump’s “authoritarian power grabs.”
The comedian played several clips of MAGA figures attempting to downplay Trump’s actions. Specifically, they brushed aside the former president’s public pressure on Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi to pursue political rivals. Instead of condemning it as an abuse of power, they reframed it as bold leadership.

Stewart Calls Out the “Refreshing” Excuses
According to Stewart, Trump’s supporters are trying to make blatant abuses look normal. He argued that they are rebranding Trump’s attempts to weaponize the government as something “refreshing” or even honest.
“He does not give a fuck anymore! He’s saying it straight up! Trump is saying, ‘The people like dictators.’ Trump is saying, ‘I hate my opponents and I want them punished.’ And Trump is saying, ‘I’ll use all the levers of government at my disposal to accomplish that goal,’” Stewart said.
Therefore, Stewart told his audience that Trump’s allies have two choices. Either they admit they support authoritarianism, or they stand with Americans who are committed to fighting for the Constitution.
“So you can get on board with that and say, ‘I’m with that.’ Or you can join the rest of us and fight like hell for this Constitution,” he added.
A Reminder About What’s at Stake
By framing Trump’s intentions in such blunt terms, Stewart underscored the seriousness of the issue. Although many political debates can get bogged down in spin, he insisted that this moment is different. For Stewart, defending democracy requires confronting the reality of Trump’s words rather than excusing them.
Moreover, Stewart emphasized that shrugging off authoritarian behavior only makes it easier for those in power to abuse it. As a result, he warned, citizens cannot afford to normalize Trump’s threats against his opponents.
Jimmy Kimmel’s Return to ABC Late Night
Earlier in his monologue, Stewart also found time to celebrate fellow late-night host Jimmy Kimmel. After months of uncertainty, Disney, which owns ABC, lifted the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The pause had followed political threats from Trump’s Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr. Carr reacted to Kimmel’s sharp criticism of conservatives’ response to the killing of activist Charlie Kirk.
Meanwhile, conservative groups launched campaigns to boycott Disney and Hulu. However, Stewart mocked these efforts, joking about the hollow threats to cancel streaming subscriptions.
“That campaign that you all launched pretending you were going to cancel Hulu while secretly racing through four seasons of Only Murders in the Building, that really worked. Congratulations,” Stewart quipped.
Why Stewart’s Words Matter Now
Although Stewart’s humor often softens his critique, the larger message was clear. Trump has openly stated his willingness to punish opponents and use government tools for personal gain. Furthermore, Stewart highlighted how dangerous it is when political supporters normalize such behavior.
In addition, the timing of his remarks matters. With Kimmel returning to late-night television, comedians once again have a national stage to push back against authoritarian narratives. Together, voices like Stewart’s and Kimmel’s contribute to a broader cultural resistance.
The Bottom Line
Jon Stewart’s message to MAGA supporters was straightforward yet powerful: stop making excuses for Trump’s authoritarian tendencies. Instead of reframing his abuses as strength, Stewart urged them to acknowledge the danger and join the fight to protect American democracy.
