The “cortisol cocktail” has been gaining popularity on social media, touted as a remedy for stress and fatigue. But despite its claims, doctors are pushing back, warning that this viral drink could actually worsen the very symptoms people are trying to alleviate.

What Is the Cortisol Cocktail?

The cortisol cocktail is a popular drink made with coconut water, sea salt, and citrus juice, sometimes adding magnesium or electrolytes. It’s believed to hydrate, balance hormones, and boost energy, especially for those facing stress or fatigue.

Despite its name, the cortisol cocktail doesn’t contain cortisol itself—it’s named for the hormone because some believe the drink can support healthy cortisol levels and reduce stress.

Doctors Push Back Against the Trend

However, medical experts are questioning the claims surrounding the cortisol cocktail. The idea that high stress levels lead to “adrenal fatigue” or cause the adrenal glands to exhaust their ability to produce cortisol is, according to doctors, a myth.

“There is no such thing as ‘adrenal fatigue’ outside of a rare condition known as adrenal insufficiency,” said Anat Ben-Shlomo, MD, an endocrinologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Lawrence Kirschner, MD, PhD, of the NIH, agrees, noting that there’s no evidence to support the idea that normal adrenal glands lose their ability to function under stress.

The Risks of the Cortisol Cocktail

In fact, the drink could backfire for some people. “It can intensify the symptoms it’s supposed to help,” nutritionist Brooke Kelly explained. The high fruit juice content in some versions can cause a rapid spike in blood sugar, followed by a crash. For people dealing with stress, anxiety, or fatigue, this rollercoaster effect can make things worse, rather than better.

Understanding Cortisol’s Role in the Body

It’s important to understand that cortisol, often blamed for stress, is essential for several bodily functions. “Cortisol helps regulate blood sugar, blood pressure, fluid balance, inflammation, and plays a crucial role in how we wake up and wind down,” says Kelly. It also contributes to energy production, brain function, and the body’s response to exercise.

A Balanced Approach to Stress Management

While staying hydrated and replenishing minerals is beneficial, there’s no magic drink that will completely eliminate stress. Experts recommend using a holistic approach that includes exercise, adequate sleep, social connections, and relaxation techniques like meditation.

Before jumping on the latest wellness trend, it’s always best to listen to your body and consult a healthcare provider if you have concerns about your stress levels or health.
