The blade kissed cloth before the sound of laughter reached her ears.

Commander Briar Cade had been moving through the eastern corridor of Camp Pendleton’s training complex, a clipboard tucked beneath her arm. Her hair was cut in a civilian style, her utility blouse carried no visible rank. She was present in the capacity she preferred most—an evaluator on temporary attachment, unannounced, unmarked, and unnoticed.

“Hey—slow it down.”

The voice came from behind her.

She stopped.

Three Marines stepped into the corridor ahead, spreading out just enough to block the exit. They were young. Relaxed. Self-assured in the way that comes from believing accountability is something that happens to other people.

“You new here?” one of them asked, his eyes taking a long, unhidden inventory. “Don’t remember seeing your name on the roster.”

Briar met his stare without flinching. “I’m authorized to be here.”

They exchanged looks, amused.

“Authorized,” another repeated, grinning. “That’s a good one. You don’t look like command.”

The third Marine drifted closer. In his hand was a training knife—rubber, blunt-edged, standard issue for drills. He spun it loosely between his fingers, casual, careless.

“Let’s clear something up,” he said. “You don’t walk through our space without checking in first.”

Briar said nothing.

She measured instead.

Distance: under four feet.
Surface: smooth concrete.
Threats: one visible training blade.
Exits: blocked.
Intent: authority posturing disguising escalation.

The knife snapped forward—not toward her skin, but toward her uniform.

“No, sir.”

He smiled faintly. “I expected that.”

A young Marine passed her, hesitated, then turned back.

“Ma’am,” he said, unsure but sincere, “thank you.”

“For what?” she asked.

She inclined her head. “Keep it there.”
